Aguascalientes

A small, proud city in the geographic heart of Mexico that punches far above its weight during the Feria Nacional de San Marcos - the country's largest and oldest state fair, running since 1828 and drawing millions every April and May. For those three weeks, this quiet colonial capital transforms into one of the biggest parties in the Americas. The rest of the year, social life centers on the pleasant Plaza de la Patria and the surrounding pedestrian streets, where cafes, ice cream shops, and traditional restaurants create a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The culinary scene is rooted in the Bajío tradition - birria, gorditas, and the local specialty of "lechón" (roast suckling pig). The Mercado Terán is the city's gastronomic heart. The Teatro Morelos and the Museo Nacional de la Muerte (National Museum of Death) - a fascinating collection exploring Mexico's unique relationship with mortality - are cultural highlights. The city's printmaking tradition, influenced by the legendary José Guadalupe Posada (creator of the iconic "La Catrina" skeleton), gives the local arts scene a distinctive edge. Nightlife is modest but genuine, with cantinas and bars around the centro and the Zona Dorada. Architecturally, the centro is a well-preserved colonial grid featuring the Baroque Government Palace with its dramatic murals and the elegant Cathedral Basilica. The Templo de San Antonio is a riot of eclectic styles - Baroque, neoclassical, and neo-Gothic all in one building. The surrounding region offers thermal springs (the city's namesake), vineyards, and the semi-desert landscape of the altiplano. The nearby Pueblo Mágico of Calvillo, known as the "guava capital of the world," provides a charming day trip. A city that proves you don't need to be enormous to have an outsized cultural impact - intimate, welcoming, and home to one of the greatest festivals on the continent.

Named for its hot springs, this compact central-highlands city enjoys a mild semi-arid climate at 1,888 meters - one of the most agreeable in the Mexican interior. Dry Season (November-April): Cool mornings and warm afternoons, with temperatures between 3°C (37°F) and 24°C (75°F). Frost is possible in December and January. Rainy Season (May-October): Afternoon showers are regular but brief, with temperatures from 13°C (55°F) to 29°C (84°F). June tends to be the hottest month. The dry air and moderate altitude create a comfortable, temperate feel for most of the year. The city's name - "hot waters" - refers to the thermal springs that originally drew settlers, not the climate itself.
