St. Louis

The Gateway to the West is a city of contradictions and quiet resilience - a former frontier boomtown that has reinvented itself through craft beer, culinary innovation, and a neighborhood-driven culture that outsiders rarely expect. The social scene is defined by its neighborhoods, each with a fiercely distinct identity. The Hill is the Italian-American heart, where toasted ravioli was invented and bocce courts still see regular play. Soulard - one of the oldest neighborhoods west of the Mississippi - is a French-colonial enclave of brick row houses and raucous bars. The Grove and Cherokee Street have emerged as the creative and multicultural hubs, with galleries, international restaurants, and a thriving LGBTQ+ community. The culinary landscape is more interesting than most outsiders realize - beyond the famous thin-crust pizza and toasted ravioli, the city has a growing farm-to-table movement and a Bosnian food scene (home to the largest Bosnian population outside Bosnia). The craft beer scene is world-class, anchored by the Anheuser-Busch legacy but driven by dozens of independent breweries. The Fox Theatre - a gloriously over-the-top 1929 movie palace - and the Muny (the nation's oldest and largest outdoor musical theater) anchor the performing arts. Nightlife ranges from the blues clubs of the Delmar Loop to the cocktail bars of the Central West End and the dive bars of Soulard. The Gateway Arch is the obvious architectural icon - a 192-meter stainless steel parabola that remains one of the most elegant structures in America. Forest Park, larger than Central Park, houses the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Zoo (free admission), the Science Center, and the Missouri History Museum - all free, a remarkable civic offering. Beyond the city, the Missouri wine country along the Hermann Wine Trail and the Ozark hills provide natural escapes. Cahokia Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just across the river in Illinois, preserves the remains of the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. A city that doesn't shout for attention but rewards those who listen - generous, gritty, and genuinely surprising.

Weather

Straddling the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, this city gets the full continental treatment - hot, humid summers and cold winters, with dramatic weather swings that keep residents on their toes. Spring (March-May): Volatile and beautiful, with temperatures from 5°C (41°F) to 23°C (73°F). Severe thunderstorms and the occasional tornado watch come with the territory. Summer (June-August): Hot and sticky, with averages between 21°C (70°F) and 33°C (91°F). The humidity can be oppressive, but the city embraces it with outdoor festivals and Cardinals baseball. Autumn (September-November): The reward for surviving summer - crisp, golden days cooling from 24°C (75°F) to 6°C (43°F). The best season for exploring the city on foot. Winter (December-February): Cold and variable, with temperatures between -5°C (23°F) and 5°C (41°F). Ice storms are more common than heavy snow, and the occasional Arctic blast drops things well below zero.
