Eindhoven

Eindhoven is the Netherlands' design capital — a city whose identity was forged by Philips (the electronics giant that effectively built the city in the 20th century) and transformed, after Philips's partial departure, into a creative and technological hub of extraordinary energy. It is home to the Dutch Design Week — the largest design event in Northern Europe — and has reinvented itself as a city where design thinking, technology, and creative culture are the defining civic values. The former Philips factory complex at Strijp-S is the most dramatic expression of this transformation: an enormous industrial campus of brick factory buildings converted into a creative district of studios, restaurants, galleries, music venues, and tech companies. Strijp-S is the social and cultural heart of contemporary Eindhoven — where on any given weekend a food market, a design exhibition, a music festival, or an art installation might occupy buildings that once produced light bulbs and televisions. The Klokgebouw (Clock Building) and Ketelhuis anchor this precinct with regular cultural programming. The 18 Septemberplein and the Stratumseind — reportedly Europe's longest bar street — form the commercial heart of the city's nightlife. Stratumseind's concentration of bars, cafés, and music venues in a single street gives the city a lively, accessible evening character. The Van Abbemuseum is one of the most important contemporary art museums in the Netherlands, with a strong collection including works by Picasso, Mondrian, and leading conceptual artists. The Philips Museum documents the industrial and design history of the company that made the city. The DAF Museum celebrates the Dutch automotive brand. Dutch Design Week each October brings designers, manufacturers, and visitors from across the world to Eindhoven's venues. The adjacent province of North Brabant offers the De Kempen nature reserve, the fortress city of 's-Hertogenbosch, and the Efteling fantasy theme park.
