Eastern Slovakia's beating heart announces itself through the spectacular Cathedral of St Elizabeth — Slovakia's largest church and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in central Europe — rising over the spindle-shaped Hlavná street that forms the elegant medieval centre of the country's second city. A 2013 European Capital of Culture, the city has spent the last decade transforming derelict industrial buildings into creative spaces, regenerating its medieval quarters and emerging as one of central Europe's most pleasantly underrated short-break destinations. Café culture spreads along the spectacular pedestrianised Hlavná street where pavement terraces nestle against baroque facades and the famous Singing Fountain plays classical music several times daily, joined by third-wave roasters in the regenerated Tabačka Kulturfabrik creative quarter and atmospheric coffee houses in the Old Town's burgher houses. The dining scene celebrates eastern Slovak comfort cooking — bryndzové halušky sheep cheese dumplings, kapustnica sauerkraut soup, klobasa smoked sausage, sweet pierogi, the famous local zemiakové placky potato pancakes — with a confident emerging fine-dining tier, vibrant Hungarian and Ukrainian restaurants reflecting the city's diverse heritage, and an excellent craft-beer movement. The State Theatre Košice stages opera, ballet and drama in a magnificent 1899 neo-baroque building, the State Philharmonic Košice performs in the spectacular House of Arts, and the open-air summer programmes in the Hlavná street main square and the Hradová hill amphitheatre are highlights of the warm-weather calendar. Nightlife is youthful and enthusiastic thanks to a substantial student population, with cocktail bars in baroque cellars throughout the Old Town, craft-beer pubs along Hlavná street, jazz clubs in regenerated industrial spaces, and a growing electronic-music scene at Tabačka Kulturfabrik and other creative venues. Major events include the famously magical Christmas markets on Hlavná street (consistently rated among central Europe's best); the spectacular Košice Peace Marathon each October (the oldest international marathon in Europe, running annually since 1924); the prestigious USE THE C!TY urban festival; the White Night contemporary art festival; the Košice Music Spring international classical festival; and the lively Use the C!ty creative festival. Distinct neighbourhoods include the spectacular pedestrian Hlavná street centre with the cathedral, theatre, town hall and historic Bishop's Palace; the historic Lower Gate quarter with its renovated medieval houses; the bohemian Tabačka Kulturfabrik creative quarter; the leafy Hradová hill area with its panoramic city views; and the modern Auparku and Optima commercial districts. Architectural highlights are extraordinary: the spectacular 14th-century Cathedral of St Elizabeth (Slovakia's largest church and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe); the magnificent 1899 State Theatre Košice; the unique Singing Fountain (built in 1986 with synchronised music and water); the medieval Urban's Tower bell tower; the baroque Plague Column on Hlavná; the spectacular medieval Lower Gate; and the modern Steel Park science centre. Day trips lead spectacularly across eastern Slovakia and beyond: the spectacular Slovak Paradise National Park for hiking through narrow gorges and ladders; the High Tatras mountain range for skiing and dramatic alpine scenery; the medieval Spiš Castle (one of central Europe's largest castles, UNESCO World Heritage); the wooden Greek-Catholic churches of the Carpathian villages (also UNESCO); the famous Tokaj wine country just across the Hungarian border; and the historic Hungarian city of Miskolc for an easy day out. Founded in the 13th century and granted the first urban coat of arms in Europe in 1369, the city safeguards its medieval heritage in the East Slovak Museum (one of Slovakia's oldest, with a remarkable gold treasure of 2,920 gold coins), the East

Weather
Continental climate at the eastern edge of Slovakia gives Košice slightly more pronounced seasonal extremes than the capital — hotter summers, colder winters, and more snow. Sheltered location in the Hornád river valley produces dramatic morning fogs and frost effects. Spring (March-May) climbs from 1-12°C (34-54°F) in March to a pleasant 10-22°C (50-72°F) by May, with the surrounding Slovak Paradise foothills bursting into pale green leaf. Summer (June-August) is warm and bright, averaging 13-26°C (55-79°F) with regular heatwave days touching 34°C (93°F); afternoon thunderstorms drift in off the surrounding hills. Autumn (September-November) cools from 10-22°C (50-72°F) in September to 0-8°C (32-46°F) by November, with the Carpathian forests turning brilliant copper and the famous Tokaj wine country (just across the Hungarian border) bringing in the harvest. Winter (December-February) is properly continental and snowy, with daytime highs of -2 to 3°C (28-37°F), overnight lows commonly -7 to -12°C (19 to 10°F), and the famous Christmas market on the main square drawing visitors from across central Europe.
