A Madrid-born philosopher named Antonio Escohotado leased an eighteenth-century farmhouse near San Rafael in 1976 and turned it into a sanctuary for free spirits, calling it El taller del olvido, the Workshop of Forgetfulness, where hippies could dance under the stars to escape their problems. When co-founder Manuel Sáenz de Heredia proposed the Greek-rooted word Amnesia, one of the most storied names in clubbing history was born. In those early years admission cost just twenty-five pesetas including a drink, there were no door restrictions, and open-air sessions around the central pool ran until noon the following day, embodying the carefree, anything-goes spirit of post-Franco Ibiza. Escohotado, never interested in the commercial side, left within months, but the club he started became the crucible of the Balearic beat, where pioneering DJs like Alfredo blended eclectic records at sunrise and helped ignite Britain's acid-house explosion and the Second Summer of Love. A new era of professionalism arrived in 1991 when MartÃn Ferrer, then owner of a Sitges club, acquired Amnesia and began modernising and expanding it, transforming the rustic farmhouse into a world-class electronic-music venue. In 1999 the club launched the German Cocoon residency led by Sven Väth, systematically introducing techno and minimal to an island previously dominated by house and trance, and cementing Amnesia's reputation as a tastemaker at the cutting edge of dance music. Famous for its foam parties, its terrace and its marathon nights, Amnesia went on to win the title of Best Global Club multiple times at the international dance-music awards, drawing clubbers and superstar DJs from around the world season after season. Approaching half a century since that first farmhouse party, Amnesia endures as a temple of Ibiza clubbing, a counterculture experiment turned global institution whose role in the birth of Balearic beat and acid house secured its place in the mythology of dance music.
