Straddling Europe and Asia with the Caspian Sea as its eastern frontier, Azerbaijan is one of those countries that confounds expectations at every turn. Baku, the capital, might be the most visually striking city you have never considered visiting: a walled medieval old town (Icherisheher) surrounded by Parisian-style boulevards, and then, rising behind all of that, the Flame Towers and a skyline of audacious modern architecture that looks like it was designed to make Dubai feel understated. The musical culture runs extraordinarily deep. Mugham, Azerbaijan's classical musical tradition, is a UNESCO-recognised art form combining poetic vocals with traditional instruments like the tar, kamancha, and gaval. Performances happen in dedicated mugham houses and cultural centres, and the emotional intensity is gripping even if you do not understand the Azerbaijani lyrics. Ashiq (troubadour) traditions remain alive in rural regions, carrying epic poetry through song. On the contemporary side, Baku's nightlife scene has grown significantly, with rooftop bars overlooking the Caspian, live jazz venues, clubs spinning everything from house music to local pop, and a growing indie scene. The Baku Jazz Festival draws international headliners annually. Beyond Baku, the country reveals itself in layers. Sheki, nestled in the Greater Caucasus foothills, is home to the exquisite Khan's Palace with its stained-glass windows and frescoed walls. Gobustan, a UNESCO site, preserves thousands of prehistoric rock carvings alongside bubbling mud volcanoes. The fire temples of Ateshgah and Yanar Dag (a hillside that has been burning with natural gas for centuries) connect to Azerbaijan's ancient Zoroastrian heritage and its nickname: the Land of Fire. Restaurants in Baku serve exceptional Azerbaijani cuisine: tender kebabs, plov (pilaf), dolma, gutab (stuffed flatbreads), and piti (a slow-cooked lamb stew served in a clay pot). Tea culture is central, with ornamental armudu glasses filled constantly. The Caspian seafood, particularly sturgeon and kutum, is superb. Cafes and bistros along Nizami Street and the Boulevard waterfront promenade buzz from morning until late.
