For me it's always the people:
Is the bouncer friendly? the people at the door? Bar staff? Whether you're new or even better: known at the place and treated like an old friend. 
It's always about the people.
Having said that: Swish decor and a cracking sound system can't go wrong, maybe a drinks special.....
