The Ritz London

The Ritz London is one of the most recognisable hotels in the world, a byword for luxury, elegance, and a particular kind of old-world grandeur that very few establishments have managed to maintain across more than a century of operation. Situated on Piccadilly in the heart of London's West End, it has been welcoming guests since 1906 and has lost remarkably little of its original lustre in the time since. The hotel was the brainchild of César Ritz, the Swiss hotelier whose name became so synonymous with luxury that it entered the English language as an adjective. Ritz had already made his reputation running the Savoy and developing the Paris Ritz before turning his attention to London. He partnered with architect Charles Mewès, who had designed the Paris property, and together they produced a building that borrowed heavily from the grand Parisian style of the Belle Époque. The steel-frame construction was considered genuinely innovative for its time, and the exterior arcade along Piccadilly remains one of the more elegant stretches of street-level architecture in central London. Inside, the hotel operates across 136 rooms and suites, each decorated in the Louis XVI style that has defined the Ritz aesthetic from the beginning. The interiors are extravagant without tipping into excess, all gilded cornicing, silk fabrics, marble bathrooms, and carefully chosen antiques. Staying here is a deliberate step back into a version of London that feels very far from the contemporary city outside the windows. Afternoon tea at the Ritz is arguably as famous as the hotel itself. Served in the Palm Court since the hotel's earliest days, it attracts visitors from around the world and requires booking weeks if not months in advance. The ritual is taken seriously here, with a strict dress code enforced and the full ceremony of tiered stands, finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and a substantial selection of teas observed with genuine care. It is one of those experiences that manages to live up to its reputation. The Ritz Restaurant is equally celebrated, a spectacular dining room overlooking Green Park that is widely considered one of the most beautiful rooms in London. It holds a Michelin star and serves classical French cuisine in a setting of chandeliers, gilded mirrors, and painted ceilings that would not look out of place in Versailles. The hotel received a Royal Warrant in 2002 and has long been a favourite of royalty, heads of state, and celebrities. Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and Princess Diana were all regular visitors at various points, and the guest list over its history reads like a roll call of the twentieth century's most prominent figures. The Ritz was purchased in 1995 by the Barclay brothers and has been privately owned since. A significant restoration programme carried out in recent years has refreshed the interiors while being careful to preserve the character that makes the hotel what it is. It was granted a Royal Warrant by King Charles III following his accession, continuing an association with the monarchy that stretches back decades. Few hotels anywhere in the world carry the weight of history, expectation, and genuine quality that the Ritz London does, and fewer still manage to meet it.
