ARTECHOUSE New York

Unspecified/General

Beneath Chelsea Market, in a boiler room that once served the old Nabisco bakery complex, ARTECHOUSE runs a digital art space that opened in August 2019. The venue is the New York outpost of a company founded in 2015 to sit at the meeting point of art, science and technology, and it launched here with Machine Hallucination, a data-driven work by the artist Refik Anadol. The roughly 6,000-square-foot room trades on its industrial bones, pairing exposed century-old architecture with what the operator bills as one of the highest-resolution projection canvases of any cultural institution. Exhibitions rotate every few months and are usually the work of a single artist or studio, projected across the walls and floor and synced to spatial sound. A companion mobile app adds an augmented-reality layer, prompting visitors to point their phones at markers to unlock hidden elements, and an XR bar serves cocktails themed to whatever show is running. The installations lean immersive and can be intense, with strong light and loud surround audio that the venue flags in advance. Because the programme changes, repeat visitors rarely see the same thing twice, and the space has become a fixture on lists of the city's more photogenic, experience-driven attractions. It sits directly under one of Manhattan's busiest food halls and beside the southern end of the High Line, so it slots neatly into a wider afternoon in the Meatpacking and Chelsea districts. Tickets are timed and best booked ahead, and there is no phone line; the venue handles enquiries by email. Opinions split along familiar lines between those who find the work genuinely affecting and those who see polished spectacle, but its technical ambition is rarely in doubt. The New York space is one of several the company runs in the United States, alongside locations in Washington and Miami, and shows often travel between them. Past programmes have spanned everything from cherry-blossom themes to data sculptures and works tied to music, so the tone can swing from meditative to club-like depending on the season. For visitors it pairs naturally with Chelsea Market's food stalls directly overhead and the galleries a few blocks north.
