Crowning the rocky outcrop of Vista Rock near the middle of Central Park, Belvedere Castle was never meant to be a real fortress. Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed it in 1867 as a folly, a decorative lookout built purely to reward the walk up from the Mall with a view; the name is Italian for beautiful view. Finished around 1869, with its surrounding terraces completed a few years later, it began as an open-air shell with no doors or windows, a deliberate eye-catcher that seems to rise from the schist beneath it. Its purpose changed in 1919, when the United States Weather Bureau moved the park's weather station into the building, sealing the openings, adding offices and reshaping the tower for instruments. Central Park's official temperature, rainfall and wind readings have been logged here ever since, though the gauges now sit in a fenced enclosure just to the south. After the bureau's staff left and the empty castle fell into disrepair, the Central Park Conservancy restored it in 1983 and reopened it as a visitor centre and nature observatory. The draw today is the same one Vaux intended: sweeping views over Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn to the north, the wooded Ramble to the south, and the skyline beyond. The castle overlooks the open-air Delacorte Theater, home to free summer Shakespeare, and houses small natural-history exhibits with binoculars and field materials aimed at younger visitors. Admission is free, the climb is short, and the spot ranks among the most photographed in the park, which means the upper terraces can grow crowded on fine weekends. It is also one of the easier high vantage points to reach without leaving the greenery behind. The structure took its present, somewhat truncated form partly by accident: a planned second pavilion was scrapped when money ran short during construction, leaving the compact castle that stands today. Built from the same Manhattan schist as the rock it sits on, with granite trim and coloured slate roofs, it reads as an extension of the landscape rather than an addition to it. The castle is a short walk from the Delacorte Theater and the Shakespeare Garden, so it commonly forms one stop on a loop through the middle of the park.
