Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Unspecified/General

Laid out on 52 acres beside Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was founded in 1910 on a former ash dump and opened to the public in May 1911, its grounds planned by the Olmsted Brothers firm under founding director Charles Stuart Gager. More than a century on, it holds upward of 10,000 kinds of plants and draws around 700,000 visitors a year to a setting that works as both a living museum and a neighbourhood retreat. Spring is its signature season. The double rows of pink Kanzan cherry trees along the Cherry Esplanade are among the most photographed sights in the city, and the garden's long-running Sakura Matsuri festival times itself to the bloom. The adjacent Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, built in 1915, is one of the oldest gardens of its kind in the United States, with a vermilion torii gate set in a pond and a viewing pavilion that draws crowds in both spring blossom and autumn colour. Other features fill out the year: the Cranford Rose Garden, a fragrant herb garden, a native flora section, and a complex of conservatories whose glasshouses shelter tropical plants, desert species and an extensive bonsai collection through the colder months. The garden also runs education programmes, plant sales and a long-standing contest that encourages Brooklyn residents to green their own blocks. For visitors it pairs naturally with the neighbouring Brooklyn Museum and Prospect Park, making for a full day in central Brooklyn. It is calmer and more contained than the larger botanical garden up in the Bronx, which suits a slower wander, and timing matters: the cherry-blossom weekends are spectacular but extremely busy, while a weekday outside peak bloom offers much of the same beauty with room to breathe. Admission is charged, with some free hours during the week. Quieter corners reward a slow visit: a shaded woodland walk, a water-garden lily pool and a fragrance garden planted for visitors who cannot see the blooms. The garden is fully walkable in an afternoon, photography is popular year-round, and the on-site shop and cafe make it easy to linger. Its proximity to the subway and to Prospect Park makes it one of the more accessible green escapes in the city.
