Less a museum in the usual sense than a giant playground built from salvage, City Museum occupies a former shoe factory and warehouse in downtown St. Louis and invites visitors to climb, crawl and slide through its interior and grounds. It was created by the sculptor Bob Cassilly, who bought the largely vacant ten-storey building in 1993 and, with a crew of artisans, opened the museum in October 1997. The exhibits are assembled almost entirely from reclaimed material: old bridges, aircraft, industrial machinery, chimneys, scrap metal and architectural fragments are welded and concreted into a maze of tunnels, caves, slides and rooftop sculptures. Two repurposed planes, a school bus cantilevered over the roof edge, a ten-storey slide and a multi-storey outdoor jungle gym called MonstroCity are among the best-known features, and much of it is meant to be physically explored rather than merely viewed. The project has never really been finished. Cassilly kept building until his death in 2011 in an accident at a separate project, and a team known as the Cassilly Crew continues to add and rework features, so the museum changes from visit to visit. It also holds quieter elements, including collections of architectural ornament, a circus, an aquarium and a shoelace exhibit nodding to the building's industrial past. For visitors the experience is unusual and physical, drawing families, teenagers and adults alike, with the standing advice that sturdy clothing, closed shoes and a tolerance for tight, dark spaces all help. It can get crowded at weekends and in the evenings, when the atmosphere shifts livelier, and the scale means most people miss large parts on a single visit. Under outside ownership since 2019, it remains one of the most distinctive attractions in the city, regularly cited among the best of its kind anywhere. Food and drink are part of the draw, with a rooftop bar, snack stands and a restaurant scattered through the building, and the rooftop itself carries a Ferris wheel and the cantilevered bus. Lockers, limited signage and a deliberately disorienting layout are all part of the design, which rewards curiosity over planning. Height and age limits apply to some features, and staff are stationed throughout to keep the more daring climbs in check.
