Downtown Manhattan Heliport

Unspecified/General
Jutting into the East River at Pier 6, near the southern tip of Manhattan, the Downtown Manhattan Heliport is a small but busy landing pad that serves as one of the city's main hubs for helicopter flights. Also known as the Wall Street heliport, it sits in the shadow of the Financial District skyline and handles a mix of business charters, commuter shuttles and the sightseeing tours that buzz over the harbour. The heliport is compact, with a handful of pads on a pier deck, an operations building and fuelling facilities, all squeezed onto the waterfront beside the East River esplanade. It is one of only a few heliports operating in Manhattan, and it has long been the focus of debate over the noise and safety of helicopter traffic over a dense city, with periodic moves to limit tourist flights. Its main draw for travellers is the aerial tour. From here, short flights lift off over New York Harbor for sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the financial towers and the length of Manhattan, an expensive but memorable way to see the city from above. The same pads also serve executives commuting to the airports and beyond, and charter flights along the eastern seaboard. For visitors the practicalities are simple: tours and charters are booked in advance through the operators that fly from the pad, departures are weather-dependent, and the experience is brief and pricey. The heliport is easy to reach on foot from the Financial District and the Staten Island Ferry terminal, and it sits beside the waterfront promenade, which itself offers free harbour views for those who would rather stay on the ground. Its history is bound up with that debate. A 2016 agreement with the city sharply cut the number of tourist flights from the pad, and a 2018 doors-off photo-flight crash that killed five passengers, though it departed from a New Jersey heliport, intensified scrutiny of the whole industry. The pier also lies on the route of harbour ferries and a short walk from the Staten Island and Governors Island terminals, so even non-flyers pass through the area for its open water views.
