EastVille Comedy Club

Unspecified/General

A 120-seat stand-up room a short walk from the Barclays Center, EastVille Comedy Club bills itself as the oldest dedicated comedy club in Brooklyn. It sits on Atlantic Avenue on the edge of Boerum Hill and the borough's cultural district, with a small bar in front and a showroom of two-top tables behind, staging anywhere from one to several shows a night. The club has a Manhattan backstory. It was founded by Marko and Tia Elgart in the East Village in 2008, in a grungy basement that became part of its early character, and ran there for a decade before the lease ended. Rather than stay in Manhattan, the owners moved across the river in 2018, opening a brighter, more modern space in Brooklyn and keeping the established name to hold on to a decade of branding and a loyal following. Like most clubs of its type, it runs on showcase line-ups of multiple comedians rather than single headliners, with a two-drink minimum and house-made popcorn and candy alongside cocktails. Over the years its stages, between the two locations, have hosted comedians who went on to wider fame, among them Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Judah Friedlander and Andrew Schulz, alongside touring acts and newcomers. For visitors the appeal is a centrally located, full-time comedy venue in a borough that long lacked one, handy before or after an event at the nearby arena and well served by the Atlantic Avenue transit hub. As with any club, the strength of a given night depends on the bill, and the room also hosts outside producers, open mics and family-friendly shows with magicians and clean comedians. The Brooklyn room runs shows most nights of the week, with extra late sets on weekends, and tickets are sold by the show with assigned or first-come seating depending on the night. Its position near the junction of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues puts it among the bars and restaurants of Boerum Hill and Fort Greene, within reach of the long-distance and subway lines that meet at the Atlantic terminal. The intimate scale keeps most seats close to the stage, and audience interaction is common.
