Richard Rodgers Theatre

Unspecified/General

A Broadway house on West 46th Street, the Richard Rodgers Theatre seats around 1,319 people and has been a fixture of the Theater District since the mid-1920s. Though mid-sized by Broadway standards, it has hosted an outsized share of acclaimed productions over its long life and is best known today as the home of a record-breaking modern musical. The theatre opened in 1925, built by the developer Irwin Chanin and designed by the architect Herbert Krapp, and was originally named for the street it stands on. It changed names several times over the decades before being rechristened in 1990 in honour of the composer Richard Rodgers, one of the most influential figures in American musical theatre, whose works helped define the form. The house has long enjoyed a reputation for hits, having staged numerous Tony Award–winning shows across the twentieth century. Since 2015 it has been home to Hamilton, the hugely successful hip-hop musical about an American founding father by Lin-Manuel Miranda, which swept the major awards and turned the theatre into a place of pilgrimage for fans. Its location places it among the dense cluster of playhouses just off Broadway, within the heart of the district that gives the area its identity. For audiences the Richard Rodgers offers an intimate yet substantial Broadway experience, where most seats sit close to the stage. Tickets are sold through the resident production, often in high demand, performances run several times a week with matinees, and the theatre's central location keeps it within an easy walk of the restaurants, hotels and transit lines around Times Square. The theatre's long association with award-winning work has made it one of the most sought-after addresses on Broadway for producers, and a ticket here often means a seat at a defining show of its era. Like most Broadway houses it is compact, with steep mezzanines that bring even the upper levels close to the action, and its lobby and façade retain the character of the 1920s building boom that gave the district its cluster of historic playhouses, many designed by the same prolific architect.
