Lummus Park

Unspecified/General
Running the length of South Beach's famous oceanfront, Lummus Park is the broad ribbon of palm-dotted green that separates the Art Deco hotels of Ocean Drive from the sand and surf of the Atlantic. Named for the Lummus brothers, the pioneering bankers and developers who sold the beachfront to the city for public use in the early twentieth century, the park has anchored Miami Beach's seafront life for more than a century. The park itself is a long, landscaped strip planted with coconut palms and sea grapes, threaded by a meandering pedestrian and cycling promenade that draws a constant parade of joggers, skaters, sunbathers and tourists. Its design frames postcard views in every direction, from the pastel facades and neon of the historic district to the lifeguard towers and turquoise water beyond. History and recreation mingle along its paths. The park is home to outdoor exercise stations, beach-volleyball courts and shaded benches, and its lawns host festivals, fitness classes and public events throughout the year. The famous, brightly coloured lifeguard stands that punctuate the adjoining beach have become icons of Miami Beach in their own right. The promenade is part of a longer beachwalk that links South Beach to neighbourhoods further north, making the park a natural starting point for exploring the shoreline on foot or by bicycle. Cafes and bars line the far side of Ocean Drive, spilling their energy across to the greenery. By day the park is a sun-soaked playground; by night it glows under the lights of the strip, alive with strollers and the murmur of the surf. As the green threshold between the city's most celebrated street and its beach, Lummus Park captures the easy, sun-washed spirit of South Beach and remains one of its most photographed and best-loved public spaces. Free and open to all, the park is busiest at sunrise, when joggers and tai-chi groups claim the promenade, and again in the warm evenings when the strip comes alive. With public restrooms, showers and lifeguard service along the adjoining beach, it remains both a practical gateway to the ocean and an attraction in its own right, perfectly placed for a day spent moving between sand, shade and the cafes of Ocean Drive.
