Venetian Islands

Unspecified/General

Stretched across Biscayne Bay between downtown Miami and the city of Miami Beach, the Venetian Islands are a chain of six small, man-made islands linked by the photogenic Venetian Causeway. Created in the early 1920s by dredging material from the bay floor during the great Florida land boom, the islands were laid out as an exclusive residential alternative to the more famous Star Island and Palm Island to the south, with broad waterfront lots, gentle palm-lined streets and direct views of the city skyline. The Venetian Causeway itself, originally completed in 1925 and largely rebuilt in the 1990s while preserving its original arched bridges, is a registered historic structure and one of the most picturesque drives in Miami. With a low speed limit, generous shoulders and wide sidewalks, it has become a favourite route for cyclists, joggers and walkers crossing between the city and the beach, offering uninterrupted views of the bay, the cruise port and the high-rises beyond. Each of the six populated islands carries an Italian-themed name and has its own quiet character, ranging from clusters of mid-century homes and stucco apartment buildings to discreet modern villas. Boating is woven into daily life, with private docks, marinas and floating restaurants dotting the shorelines and the bay alive with sailboats, paddleboards and pleasure craft. For visitors, the islands are best experienced from the water on one of the popular Biscayne Bay sightseeing cruises, which loop past the causeway and point out the celebrity homes and architectural curiosities along the way. Cyclists can also rent bikes on either end and ride the causeway for a leisurely, scenic crossing. Often overlooked beside more famous Miami landmarks, the Venetian Islands repay a closer look as a quieter, equally evocative slice of the city's remarkable waterfront geography. A modest toll for cars and free passage for cyclists, joggers and pedestrians keep the causeway lightly trafficked, particularly on weekday mornings, when the views across the bay are at their sharpest. For visitors seeking a quieter, locally favoured way to experience the Miami waterfront on foot or by bike, the route remains one of the city's most rewarding open-air strolls.
