Alcatraz

Unspecified/General

Few prison sites in the world are as instantly recognisable as Alcatraz, the small rocky island in the middle of San Francisco Bay whose name has become shorthand for inescapable confinement. Originally a military fortification and Civil War-era detention site, the island opened as the United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island, in August 1934, conceived as a maximum-security, minimum-privilege federal prison to hold the most disruptive inmates from elsewhere in the federal system. The icy currents, sharks and mile-and-a-half swim to shore made escape almost impossible, although a handful of celebrated attempts continue to fuel debate over whether anyone ever made it alive. The cellblock operated for almost thirty years, housing some of the most notorious figures of mid-twentieth-century American crime, including Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly and Robert "Birdman" Stroud. The prison was closed by the Attorney General in 1963 on grounds of cost, and the island was later occupied for nineteen months by Native American activists in a landmark protest that drew national attention to indigenous rights. Today the island is run by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Visitors reach it by a short ferry from Pier 33 in the city, and on arrival pick up an acclaimed audio tour narrated in part by former guards and inmates that walks them through the cellhouse, the recreation yard, the warden's office and other key spaces. Beyond the prison itself, the island offers a surprising abundance of nature. Sea birds nest on the cliffs, gardens once tended by guards' families have been restored, and panoramic views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge surround visitors at every turn. Atmospheric, sobering and unforgettable, a visit to Alcatraz is among the essential San Francisco experiences. Tickets must be booked online well in advance, often weeks ahead during peak periods, and include the round-trip ferry and the audio tour. Visitors are advised to dress in layers for the windy bay crossing, wear comfortable shoes for the steep climb from the dock to the cellhouse and allow at least three hours for a full visit.
