AT&T Stadium

Rising from the flat Texas prairie in Arlington, midway between Dallas and Fort Worth, AT&T Stadium is the home of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League and one of the largest and most lavishly equipped stadiums in the world. Designed by HKS Architects and built at a reported cost of more than US$1.2 billion, the building opened on 27 May 2009 as Cowboys Stadium, taking its current name following a major sponsorship deal in 2013 with the telecommunications giant. The building's scale is extraordinary. A regular seating capacity of around 80,000 can be expanded to well over 100,000 for major events such as the Super Bowl, college football championships and major concerts, while the retractable roof and twin glass end-zone doors give the stadium an open-air feel even on uncomfortably hot Texas days. A signature feature is the colossal centre-hung video board, one of the largest of its kind, which spans most of the field below. The building is itself a temple to scale. Twin arches rising thirty storeys high carry the load of the retractable roof, while five floors of premium suites, club lounges and a substantial contemporary art collection lend the venue a feel closer to a luxury convention centre than a traditional football stadium. Beyond Cowboys home games and the city's annual college bowl, the stadium has hosted Super Bowl XLV, a Final Four basketball championship, international soccer matches, motocross and a steady roster of stadium-tour concerts from the world's biggest acts. For visitors with no game to attend, daily guided self-guided tours offer access to the field, locker rooms, suites and player tunnels, and provide one of the more remarkable looks at modern stadium design available anywhere in the United States. Tickets for tours are reasonable and can be booked online ahead of a visit, with VIP options offering even closer access to the inner workings of the building. For visitors to north Texas, even a brief stop at the stadium offers an unforgettable glimpse of the scale, ambition and showmanship that have come to define modern American football culture.
