In the eastern reaches of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the Conservatory of Flowers is the oldest public glasshouse in North America and one of the most photographed buildings in the city. Built in the late 1870s and opened to the public in 1879, the gleaming white Victorian glasshouse is patterned on the great Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, with intricate wood-and-glass framing assembled originally in New York and shipped around Cape Horn to the city by a wealthy local benefactor. The conservatory is divided into five galleries, each meticulously maintained to recreate a different tropical habitat. A lowland tropics gallery is filled with the lush understorey of equatorial rainforest, with banana plants, coffee trees, ginger, philodendron and the celebrated giant Amazon water lily, whose enormous leaves can support the weight of a small child. The aquatic plants gallery and the highland tropics gallery hold orchids, carnivorous plants and species drawn from the cloud forests of South America and Asia. A separate potted plants gallery showcases the conservatory's collection of more than seven hundred plant species in a constantly rotating display, while a fifth gallery hosts changing seasonal exhibitions ranging from butterflies in summer to elaborate model-train displays at Christmas. Beyond the building, the surrounding grounds include formal Victorian gardens, the John McLaren Rhododendron Dell and a small but charming dahlia garden, all free to enjoy. Across the road, the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences are within easy walking distance. A modest admission fee covers the conservatory itself, with annual passes available for repeat visitors.
