In Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum is the principal fine-art museum of San Francisco and one of the most architecturally striking buildings in the city. Founded in 1895 as a permanent legacy of the California Midwinter International Exposition by newspaper publisher M. H. de Young, the museum has occupied several iterations of building on the same Golden Gate Park site, the current copper-clad structure designed by the celebrated Swiss firm Herzog and de Meuron opening to enormous acclaim in October 2005 after the previous neoclassical building was condemned following the 1989 earthquake. The new building is unmistakable. A long, low form clad in perforated copper panels designed gradually to develop a green-streaked patina as the metal oxidises, it culminates in a 144-foot twisting tower whose top-floor observation deck offers free panoramic views of the city. The interior's flowing galleries, courtyards and outdoor sculpture spaces step organically through a wooded landscape. The collections concentrate on American art, including a celebrated holding of paintings, sculpture and decorative art from the seventeenth century to the present, alongside major collections of art from Africa, the Pacific Islands and the indigenous Americas. Highlights include works by Albert Bierstadt, Wayne Thiebaud, Sargent, O'Keeffe and Hopper, plus a major textile and costume gallery. The museum is also celebrated for its blockbuster temporary exhibitions, ranging in recent years from retrospectives of Frida Kahlo, Yves Saint Laurent, Bouquets to Art and Frida Kahlo, drawing enormous crowds and reinforcing the institution's reputation as a popular as well as scholarly venue. A modest admission charge covers the permanent galleries, with separate fees for the major temporary exhibitions, while the observation tower is always free. The first Tuesday of every month is a free-admission day, and combination passes for both the de Young and its sister museum, the Legion of Honor, offer good value for visitors planning to see both. A typical visit takes two to three hours, easily extended for major temporary exhibitions and the free observation tower.
