Fremont Street Experience

Unspecified/General
In the historic original downtown of Las Vegas, the Fremont Street Experience is the spectacular pedestrian mall that has redefined the city's original casino strip. The five-block stretch of Fremont Street between Main and Fourth, the heart of Las Vegas's pre-1950s casino scene and the famous backdrop of the glittering neon "Glitter Gulch" of the post-war boom, was transformed in late 1995 by an audacious project that covered the entire street with an enormous canopy, raised it as a pedestrian-only mall and turned it into a single, continuous outdoor entertainment venue. The unmistakable feature is the Viva Vision canopy. Stretching the full five blocks at a height of ninety feet, the canopy is studded with more than 49 million LED lights that combine each evening into spectacular synchronised audiovisual shows accompanied by a 550,000-watt sound system. Shows run every hour from dusk until late, featuring everything from rock and pop concerts to celebrations of Las Vegas history and themed seasonal programming. Beneath the canopy, the historic Golden Nugget, Four Queens, Fremont, Plaza and other classic downtown casinos line the pedestrian mall, retaining much of the mid-century atmosphere that has long set the downtown casinos apart from the corporate Strip. Live bands play on multiple outdoor stages each evening, free of charge, while souvenir kiosks, snack stands and a handful of unusual attractions including a triple-zipline that runs the full length of the mall add to the energy. The result is an open-air, neon-soaked party that draws extraordinary crowds each evening, particularly on weekends and holidays. Strict alcohol-allowed and dress-relaxed policies set it apart from the more polished Strip. Free to enter and easily reached by transit, the Fremont Street Experience offers visitors an unmistakably old-Vegas dose of energy unavailable anywhere else in the city. Visitors should plan for an evening visit, when the canopy shows are at their best and the surrounding casinos are at their busiest. Pedestrian traffic can be intense on weekend evenings, with street performers, themed costumed characters and tip-soliciting buskers a constant fixture, lending the experience an unmistakably old-Vegas energy unavailable anywhere else.
