Stretching three miles westward from the Haight to the Pacific Ocean and just under a half-mile wide at its broadest point, Golden Gate Park is the great urban park of San Francisco and at 1,017 acres around twenty percent larger than New York's Central Park. Conceived in 1870 by the city's Park Commission on land widely considered an unpromising stretch of shifting sand dunes, the park was painstakingly transformed by the chief engineer William Hammond Hall and his successor John McLaren, whose vision of a wild, naturalistic landscape rather than a formal European-style park has shaped its character ever since. The park is densely packed with attractions. The de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences stand opposite each other along the Music Concourse, an outdoor plaza whose sunken bandshell hosts free Sunday afternoon concerts in good weather. The Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the National AIDS Memorial Grove and the open-air Beach Chalet brewery all draw their own crowds. Outdoor recreation runs through every corner. The park's polo fields, archery range, lawn bowling greens, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and bicycle and skating paths, plus the John F. Kennedy Drive promenade closed to traffic on weekends and the long Stow Lake with its rental rowboats and dragon boat, give the park a constantly busy, locally beloved feel. A herd of bison grazes peacefully in a paddock at the western end, a quirky legacy of late-nineteenth-century efforts to revive the species. Throughout the year, major free public events including the Outside Lands music festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, the LoveFest and seasonal fairs draw enormous crowds. Free, open from dawn until late and easily reached by transit, Golden Gate Park offers the visitor an inexhaustibly varied taste of the city's public life. The park's western edge runs out to the long sweep of Ocean Beach, where the historic Cliff House and the ruins of the Sutro Baths add a memorable end to a day's exploration. The recently restored Dutch and Murphy windmills, originally built in the early twentieth century to pump groundwater for the park's irrigation, stand as picturesque landmarks at this western end. A free shuttle service operates within the park on weekends and holidays, making it easy to move between attractions without returning to a vehicle. Cycling is particularly popular, with dedicated rental shops at the eastern entrance offering a variety of bikes for half- and full-day adventures.
