Unspecified/General
Stretching across some four hundred and forty-five acres between the Texas Medical Center and the Museum District just south of downtown Houston, Hermann Park is one of the most heavily visited parks in Texas and a cherished centrepiece of city life. The park was created in 1914 on a tract of land donated to the city by the developer and philanthropist George H. Hermann, whose vision was to create a major public park in a city whose rapid growth had left few large-scale green spaces. The park's grand central axis runs north and south from the equestrian statue of Sam Houston, looking down the Reflection Pool toward the Pioneer Memorial Obelisk. Tall live oaks, broad lawns and gently meandering pathways flow throughout the property, with several distinct themed areas anchoring the park's major attractions. The Houston Zoo, one of the most visited zoos in the United States, occupies the western edge of the park. The Japanese Garden, a hidden gem of carefully tended bridges, koi ponds and traditional pavilions, offers a contemplative retreat at the park's southern edge. The Centennial Gardens, opened in 2014 to mark the park's hundredth anniversary, feature a rose garden, an arid garden, a small mount with sweeping views and a celebrated pollinator habitat. Active pursuits include the Hermann Park Golf Course, opened in 1922 and one of the oldest public courses in Texas, paddleboat rentals on the placid McGovern Lake, and the much-loved Hermann Park Railroad, a miniature train that has carried millions of children around the park's perimeter since the 1950s. The 1700-seat Miller Outdoor Theatre offers free performances of music, dance and theatre throughout the year. Free, open from dawn until late and easily reached from downtown by the city's light-rail system, Hermann Park offers visitors a generous, instantly memorable taste of public life in the country's fourth-largest city. The park is connected by the city's METRORail light-rail system, with two stations serving its eastern edge and making it one of the most easily reached urban parks in Texas. Free parking is available throughout the property, although the eastern lots fill quickly on busy weekends. A series of public art installations, including the towering Sam Houston statue at the northern entrance and the contemporary James Turrell-designed Twilight Epiphany skyspace just south of the park at Rice University, lend the area a particular cultural depth.
