In the celebrated Balboa Park cultural complex about a mile north-east of downtown San Diego, the San Diego Automotive Museum occupies one of the most distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival buildings of the park's 1935 California Pacific International Exposition complex. The museum opened in 1988 in the magnificent former Foods and Beverages Building, with the elegant pink-and-white stucco exterior, deep arched colonnade and tile-roofed central tower lending the museum a uniquely atmospheric setting unmatched by most automotive museums. The museum's permanent collection comprises some 80 historically significant vehicles representing the major eras of automotive history from the early 1900s through the present day. The collection rotates regularly, with vehicles drawn from the museum's own holdings combined with extensive loans from private collectors throughout southern California. The result is an evolving exhibition that allows return visitors to see different combinations of vehicles on each visit. Standout vehicles regularly on display include several classic American muscle cars of the 1960s including the Ford Mustang, the Plymouth Barracuda and the Chevrolet Camaro; pre-war American classics including 1930s Cadillacs, Lincolns and Packards; British classics including Aston Martins, Jaguars and the celebrated MG and Triumph sports cars; and significant continental European classics including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Mercedes-Benzes and Porsches. A particular emphasis is placed on the racing history of southern California, with a dedicated gallery covering the great San Diego-area racing drivers and the Sebring, Riverside and Laguna Seca racing programmes of the post-war era. A separate motorcycles gallery covers the development of two-wheeled transportation from the early 1900s through modern superbikes. The museum's educational programmes include the popular vintage Drive Day, in which selected museum vehicles are driven by carefully vetted museum members through the streets of San Diego, allowing the public to see the cars in motion rather than as static displays. Modestly priced and easily combined with the cluster of other Balboa Park museums on the surrounding Plaza, the museum is an easy half-day visit for car enthusiasts.
