Fenway Park

Unspecified/General

In the dense urban Fenway-Kenmore neighbourhood about two miles west of downtown Boston, Fenway Park is the oldest active baseball stadium in Major League Baseball, the home of the Boston Red Sox and one of the most beloved sporting venues in the United States. The 37,755-seat ballpark opened on 20 April 1912 (just five days after the sinking of the Titanic, an event that overshadowed all news coverage of the opening). Continuously occupied by the Red Sox since the opening day, the park has served as one of the most distinctive small ballparks in baseball for more than 110 consecutive seasons. The ballpark's defining feature is the celebrated 37-foot, 2-inch Green Monster, the colossal left-field wall that begins just 310 feet from home plate. The wall was originally a smaller wooden structure built to prevent residents of the Lansdowne Street apartments behind the wall from watching games for free, but was substantially enlarged following the 1934 reconstruction and painted in its now-iconic dark green colour in 1947. A 269-seat Green Monster Seats section was added atop the wall in 2003, providing one of the most distinctive premium-seating experiences in any major league ballpark. The park's other distinctive features include the celebrated single red seat in section 42 of the right-field bleachers, marking the spot where the longest home run ever measured in the park (a 502-foot blast by Ted Williams in June 1946) landed. The vintage manually operated scoreboard at the base of the Green Monster (one of only two manually operated scoreboards remaining in Major League Baseball) is updated by hand throughout each game by a small crew of scoreboard operators inside the wall. The park's odd dimensions reflect both the available urban site and the various small expansions and modifications undertaken over the decades. The right field foul pole, just 302 feet from home plate, is the shortest in the major leagues. The triangular shape of the bleacher seating in deep center, where the angled walls converge to the deepest point in the ballpark at 420 feet, is unique in modern baseball. The Red Sox have won four World Series championships at the park (2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018), ending the celebrated 86-year Curse of the Bambino with the 2004 championship.
