Unspecified/General
In the heart of downtown Washington at the corner of 10th and E Streets immediately east of the Federal Triangle, the Hard Rock Cafe Washington D.C. is one of the most heavily visited theme restaurants in the federal capital and one of the longest-operating Hard Rock locations on the American east coast. The restaurant occupies a substantial 350-seat space in a converted historic building immediately across from the celebrated Ford's Theatre National Historic Site (where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865) and has operated continuously at this central downtown location since 1990. The Hard Rock Cafe concept, founded in London in 1971 by the American restaurateurs Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton, established the global template for the music-themed restaurant. The Washington location follows the established Hard Rock formula in nearly every detail. The principal dining room is built around the brand's signature Cadillac (a 1960s gold Eldorado convertible suspended from the ceiling at the centre of the dining room), with the walls covered in a rotating display of authentic music memorabilia from the celebrated Hard Rock collection (one of the largest privately held music memorabilia collections in the world). The Washington location's permanent memorabilia display has historically featured items associated with American political and musical history. Past displays have included costumes and instruments from celebrated Washington-area musicians including Duke Ellington (born in Washington), Marvin Gaye (born in Washington), Roberta Flack and the celebrated Washington-area go-go music pioneer Chuck Brown. A separate dedicated case has historically displayed memorabilia from artists who have performed at presidential inaugurations, including handwritten lyrics, signed guitars and stage costumes. The menu follows the standard Hard Rock formula of American-style burgers, ribs, salads and sandwiches, with the celebrated Hard Rock Original Legendary Burger and the smokehouse barbecue ribs as the perennially popular signature dishes. The full bar serves the celebrated Hard Rock signature cocktail menu including the celebrated Hurricane and the celebrated Tropical Sunrise. A substantial gift shop on the ground floor sells the celebrated Hard Rock branded merchandise including the locally exclusive Washington D.C. city collector's pin (one of the most heavily collected items in the broader Hard Rock collector's market). The location is open seven days a week, with the kitchen serving until late evening.
