On the top three floors of the iconic Prudential Tower in the Back Bay neighbourhood of Boston, View Boston is the only public observation deck in the city and the highest publicly accessible vantage point in New England. The 59,000-square-foot observation complex opened on 15 June 2023 following a comprehensive 100-million-dollar renovation of the previous Prudential Skywalk Observatory, which had occupied the same upper floors of the tower under various operators since the tower's 1965 opening. The Prudential Tower itself is one of the most recognisable buildings in the Boston skyline, with the 749-foot, 52-storey modernist tower dominating the central downtown skyline since its 1965 completion. The tower was the first major skyscraper built in Boston during the post-war era and held the title of the tallest building in Boston for some 11 years before being surpassed by the 200 Clarendon Street tower (the John Hancock Tower) in 1976. The Prudential remains the second-tallest building in Boston and continues to anchor the Prudential Center mixed-use complex that surrounds it. The new View Boston observation complex occupies the top three floors of the tower, with each floor providing a distinctly different visitor experience. The Cloud Terrace on the 52nd floor is a fully open-air outdoor viewing terrace, the only outdoor observation deck in Boston, providing 360-degree panoramic views of the entire central downtown skyline, the Charles River, the Boston Harbor and the Greater Boston region. The terrace stands at 749 feet above street level, with the surrounding glass safety walls deliberately designed at chest height to preserve the unobstructed open-air viewing experience. The Skyline Lounge on the 51st floor combines a full-service restaurant and cocktail bar with panoramic interior views through floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides. The popular Stratus Lounge cocktail menu features signature drinks themed to Boston neighbourhoods and historic events. The interactive Discovery Center on the 50th floor combines extensive multimedia exhibits covering the history, geography and culture of Boston with a large outdoor terrace. The standout single feature is the interactive Boston in a Day immersive video experience, a 360-degree multimedia presentation projected onto the central circular ceiling that introduces visitors to the broader Boston region.
