In the Nad Al Sheba district of inland Dubai about 10 kilometres south-east of the central downtown business district, Deep Dive Dubai is the deepest swimming pool in the world and one of the most technically extraordinary recreational diving facilities ever built. The 60-metre-deep purpose-built pool opened on 27 July 2021 at the NAS Sports Complex, surpassing the previous record-holding Y-40 Deep Joy pool in Padua, Italy (42 metres) by some 18 metres and establishing Dubai as the principal global destination for recreational deep-water diving instruction. The pool itself is housed inside a dramatic 30,000-square-metre purpose-built dive centre, with the actual swimming pool occupying a vertical cylindrical shaft 30 metres in diameter at the surface and progressively narrowing through several distinct depth levels to its 60-metre maximum depth at the bottom. The pool holds approximately 14 million litres of fresh water (equivalent to about six Olympic-standard swimming pools combined), with the water continuously filtered and treated. The water temperature throughout the pool is maintained at a constant 30 degrees Celsius. The dramatic clarity of the carefully filtered water (visibility consistently exceeds 50 metres throughout the entire water column) provides one of the most extraordinary recreational diving environments available anywhere. The pool's interior is themed to recreate the appearance of a sunken ancient city, with elaborate full-scale set decoration extending from the shallow 6-metre upper platforms down to the deep 60-metre lower level. The themed environments include several recreated sunken structures (a sunken urban plaza, a small library with submerged tables and chairs, an underwater pool table, an underwater apartment with submerged furniture, an underwater arcade with vintage arcade machines and a small underwater car), all of which can be explored by visiting divers. The facility offers programmes for divers of all experience levels. The introductory Discover Scuba Diving programme allows complete beginners to experience the upper 12-metre training platforms after a 30-minute pool-side safety briefing. PADI-certified divers can explore the deeper levels (down to their certification depth) under the guidance of trained pool instructors. Technical divers with appropriate certifications can explore the deepest 60-metre level. A panoramic underwater viewing window at the 20-metre depth level provides spectators with continuous viewing of divers operating in the deeper sections.
