In the heart of the Dubai Mall on the ground floor immediately south of the celebrated Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, the Dubai Ice Rink is the largest indoor ice rink in the United Arab Emirates and the principal indoor figure-skating, ice-hockey and recreational ice-skating facility in the broader downtown Dubai region. The 1,800-square-metre Olympic-standard ice rink opened in November 2009 as part of the broader Dubai Mall complex, providing a substantial year-round indoor ice-skating facility despite the surrounding desert climate. The rink itself is a full Olympic-standard 30-metre-by-60-metre rectangular ice surface, surrounded on all four sides by spectator seating accommodating approximately 1,500 spectators for major hockey games and figure-skating exhibitions. The ice surface is maintained at the carefully controlled temperatures and humidity conditions required for high-quality figure-skating and ice-hockey conditions throughout the year, with the substantial refrigeration plant operating continuously to compensate for the surrounding ambient temperatures. The principal visitor offering is the celebrated Public Skating Sessions, with three to five individual 90-minute public skating sessions scheduled throughout each operating day. The public sessions are open to skaters of all skill levels with included skate rental and the option to add the popular Skating Aids (small penguin-shaped support frames that help young children and beginning skaters maintain their balance). The sessions are organised by approximate skill level, with the celebrated Disco Skate sessions (featuring contemporary music and special lighting effects) particularly popular with younger skaters during weekend evening hours. The rink also hosts an extensive programme of figure-skating and ice-hockey instruction throughout the year. The celebrated Dubai Ice Skating School operates beginner-through-advanced figure-skating classes throughout the year, with several certified instructors providing both group instruction and private lessons. The celebrated Dubai Mighty Camels Ice Hockey Club uses the rink as its principal training facility, with the team competing in the broader Emirates Ice Hockey League against teams from across the United Arab Emirates and the broader Gulf region. The rink hosts several major events throughout the year including the celebrated annual Dubai Ice Skating Championship (each March) and several major touring international ice shows during the broader winter tourism season. Tickets for public skating sessions are sold per session at the rink admission desk.
