Along the broader Al Salam Street in the eastern section of Abu Dhabi Island about 15 minutes east of central downtown, Khalifa Park is one of the largest landscaped urban parks in the broader Abu Dhabi region and one of the most heavily visited public open spaces in the broader Emirate. The 50-hectare park first opened in 2007 as part of the broader Abu Dhabi urban-greening programme, occupying a substantial dedicated site along the broader eastern coastline of Abu Dhabi Island. The park's landscaping is organised around a network of curving pedestrian and bicycle paths that wind through several distinct themed garden zones. The central main park lawn covers approximately 12 hectares of carefully maintained grass and provides the principal informal recreational space within the broader park, with families typically using the lawn for substantial picnic gatherings throughout the cooler winter months. The park's principal water features include a substantial central artificial lake, several small connected stream sections and a substantial fountain plaza at the central park entrance. The central artificial lake (covering approximately 3 hectares of water surface) hosts a small fleet of paddle boats and small electric tour boats available for visitor rental, with the broader lake periphery accessible to anglers using the small fishing platforms positioned at regular intervals around the lake shoreline. The park's integrated cultural amenities include the substantial Murjan Splash Park (a dedicated water-play park for younger children with multiple integrated water features), the popular Khalifa Park Aquarium (a small aquarium covering broader Persian Gulf marine life with extensive interpretive displays), the Khalifa Park Museum (a small museum covering the broader history of the Abu Dhabi Emirate), the popular Sheikh Zayed Memorial Pavilion (a small dedicated memorial commemorating the broader life of the founding President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan) and the small Khalifa Park Library. The park's integrated recreational facilities include several substantial children's playgrounds with separate sections for younger and older children, multiple barbecue areas with built-in concrete barbecue pits, several large covered picnic pavilions, a small open-air amphitheatre and several integrated cafes and refreshment stands distributed throughout the broader park grounds. The park operates daily with substantial parking facilities and a small admission fee.
