In a purpose-built circular aqua-theatre at the heart of the Al Habtoor City mixed-use development on Sheikh Zayed Road in central Dubai, La Perle by Dragone is the first permanent resident water-based theatrical production in the broader Middle East region and one of the most ambitious permanent resident productions ever staged outside Las Vegas. The 1,300-seat theatre opened on 1 September 2017 with the production's premiere performance, with the show continuing in resident operation in the same theatre. The production was conceived and directed by the celebrated Belgian theatre director Franco Dragone, the creative director responsible for several of the most successful resident productions ever staged at the Las Vegas Strip including the original Cirque du Soleil "Mystere" and "O" productions and the Las Vegas residency of Celine Dion. La Perle was Dragone's first resident production outside the broader Las Vegas market and represents one of the largest single creative investments ever made by Dragone Entertainment. The theatre itself is a purpose-built circular aqua-theatre, with a dramatic 360-degree-encircling spectator seating bowl wrapping continuously around a central circular performance space. The central performance space is configured as a hybrid water-and-dry-land environment, with a substantial 2.7-million-litre central pool occupying most of the central stage area. The pool can be partially drained to convert the central stage to a fully dry surface within seconds, with the dramatic transformations forming one of the central technical elements of the broader show. The 80-minute production combines acrobatics, aerial performance, water diving, contemporary dance and synchronised swimming in a single integrated theatrical narrative. The cast of approximately 65 performers represents one of the largest resident production casts in the broader Middle East region, with performers drawn from more than 25 different countries and many of the principal performers having extensive backgrounds with Cirque du Soleil and other major international touring shows. The dramatic technical infrastructure includes more than 270 individual flying-rigging points distributed across the dome ceiling, more than 600 individual lighting fixtures, more than 400 individual costume changes performed during each show and an integrated 30-channel surround sound system. The show is performed eight times each week.
