Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi

Unspecified/General

Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi sits within the Saadiyat Cultural District and is scheduled to open in late 2025 as the latest addition to the cluster of world-class institutions that already includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the under-construction Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Designed by Mecanoo Architecten of the Netherlands, the building takes its form from the eroded sandstone monoliths of the Hajar Mountains, with cascading volumes clad in textured pre-cast concrete that echoes geological strata. The 35,000 square metre facility houses the world's most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, known as Stan, acquired at a record 31.8 million dollar auction in 2020 and serving as the centrepiece of the dinosaur gallery. Stan stands 4 metres tall and 12 metres long, comprising 188 original fossilised bones recovered from the Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota between 1987 and 1992. The collection also includes the Murchison meteorite, one of the most studied carbonaceous chondrites in the world, containing amino acids that predate the solar system. Other galleries explore deep time spanning 13.8 billion years from the Big Bang to present-day biodiversity, the origins of life on Earth, mass extinction events, the evolution of human ancestors, and the unique ecosystems of the Arabian Peninsula including hyper-saline sabkhas, mangrove forests, coral reefs and the dunes of the Empty Quarter. A research institute within the building partners with Smithsonian and Yale University on ongoing palaeontology, palaeoanthropology and conservation biology projects. Interactive learning labs invite school groups to handle replica fossils, observe microscope specimens and participate in digital reconstruction workshops. The building is engineered to LEED Platinum standards with extensive use of natural daylighting, photovoltaic shade structures and a closed-loop greywater recycling system that supports the surrounding landscaped gardens throughout the year. Once open, the museum will join the regional cluster of cultural institutions accessible via a single Saadiyat Cultural District ticket that includes admission to multiple venues at a discounted combined rate.
