The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi

Unspecified/General

Among the largest aquariums in the Middle East, The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi opened in 2021 at the Al Qana waterfront destination, presenting more than 46,000 animals across ten themed zones that trace a journey from the mountains and rivers to the open ocean. The facility holds upward of 100 sharks and rays, a colony of penguins, sea otters, crocodiles, rays, turtles and a vast array of fish and invertebrates, alongside terrestrial and bird species that share the immersive habitats. The exhibition is structured as a narrative voyage through interconnected ecosystems, beginning in a misty mountain environment with waterfalls and freshwater species, descending through rivers and flooded forests, passing into coastal and mangrove habitats, and culminating in a large open-ocean tank crossed by a walk-through tunnel that surrounds visitors with sharks and rays. A standout feature is the UAE's deepest dive tank, which supports diving and snorkelling experiences for certified and novice guests who can enter the water alongside the marine life. Behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters and feeding presentations run throughout the day, and the aquarium operates an active conservation, rescue and rehabilitation programme for marine animals, with educational messaging woven throughout the exhibits. The themed zones are heavily landscaped and atmospherically lit, creating an immersive environment rather than a series of plain tanks. Interactive touch pools allow close contact with selected species under supervision, popular with younger visitors. The aquarium anchors the Al Qana promenade, sitting alongside the Butterfly House, dining outlets, a cinema and other attractions, and combination tickets link several of these venues. The fully indoor, climate-controlled setting makes it comfortable across all seasons, and the breadth of species and the immersive design make it a major draw for families and visitors to the capital throughout the year. Premium experiences including overnight stays beside the tanks, diving sessions and behind-the-scenes tours can be booked in advance, broadening the appeal beyond a standard walk-through visit throughout the year.
