Barcelona Aquarium

Unspecified/General

Home to one of Europe's most extensive collections of Mediterranean marine life, L'Aquarium de Barcelona sits on the Moll d'Espanya in the Port Vell harbour and ranks among the most visited attractions in the city. Opened in 1995, the aquarium holds around 11,000 animals across some 450 species, distributed through dozens of tanks that recreate marine habitats from the Mediterranean Sea and tropical waters around the world. Its centrepiece is the Oceanarium, a vast 36 metre, 3.7 million litre tank crossed by an 80 metre glass tunnel that carries visitors along a moving walkway directly through the water, surrounded by sharks, rays, sunfish, moray eels and shoals of fish swimming overhead and on all sides. The Mediterranean tanks present the local marine environments of the Catalan coast and the wider sea, while the tropical section showcases the vivid colours of coral reefs and their inhabitants. A dedicated children's zone, Explora, offers interactive and educational exhibits designed to engage younger visitors with the marine world through hands-on displays. The aquarium runs a programme of special experiences, including the opportunity for certified divers to dive within the shark tank and for beginners to be introduced to diving in a controlled environment, alongside sleepover events and behind-the-scenes tours. Conservation and education are central to its mission, with the institution involved in breeding programmes, research and awareness initiatives concerning the threats facing marine ecosystems. Its harbourside location places it within the lively Port Vell district, alongside the Maremagnum shopping centre, restaurants and the waterfront promenade, all within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter and the foot of La Rambla. The fully indoor setting makes it a reliable destination in any weather, drawing families and visitors throughout the year across every season of the calendar. Tickets can be booked online in advance to avoid queues, and premium diving and sleepover experiences broaden the appeal beyond a standard visit throughout the year across every season of the calendar.
