Rising over the heart of the Gothic Quarter, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, commonly known as Barcelona Cathedral, is the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona and one of the city's most significant religious and historic monuments. The present Gothic structure was built largely between the late thirteenth and mid-fifteenth centuries, replacing earlier churches on the same site, with the elaborate neo-Gothic main facade completed only in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, lending the building its distinctive ornate frontage. The cathedral is dedicated in part to Saint Eulalia, a young co-patron of Barcelona who, according to tradition, was martyred in Roman times, and whose remains lie in the crypt beneath the high altar. One of the cathedral's most beloved features is its cloister, a tranquil enclosed garden where thirteen white geese are traditionally kept, said to represent the age of Saint Eulalia at her martyrdom, surrounded by palms, magnolias and a small fountain. The vast interior soars with ribbed vaults supported by slender columns, lined with numerous side chapels housing altarpieces, tombs and works of religious art accumulated over the centuries. Visitors can ascend to the roof for views across the rooftops of the old city and the surrounding Gothic Quarter. The cathedral remains an active place of worship, holding regular services, while also welcoming visitors during designated hours. Its location at the centre of the Barri Gotic places it among the city's most atmospheric medieval streets, steps from the Placa Nova, the Roman walls and the warren of lanes, squares and historic buildings that define the old town. As one of the principal landmarks of historic Barcelona, the cathedral draws large numbers of visitors interested in its architecture, history and religious significance throughout the year across every season of the calendar. Admission arrangements vary between worship and tourist visiting hours, and the rooftop access and the cloister with its resident geese are among the features that draw visitors throughout the year across every season of the calendar.
