Centre Pompidou Málaga

Unspecified/General

Marked at street level by a striking multicoloured glass cube, the Centre Pompidou Malaga is the first outpost of the renowned Parisian modern art institution to open outside France, established in 2015 on the waterfront of the redeveloped Muelle Uno port district. The museum occupies a largely subterranean exhibition space beneath the harbourside promenade, crowned by the cube designed by the artist Daniel Buren, whose vivid panels have become a landmark of the seafront and a symbol of the city's ambitious cultural regeneration. Operating under an agreement with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Malaga branch displays works drawn from the parent institution's vast collection of modern and contemporary art, one of the most important in the world, allowing visitors to encounter major pieces of twentieth and twenty-first century art without travelling to France. The semi-permanent display rotates selections from the Paris holdings, presenting works by leading figures of modern art across painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation, organised around themes such as the human figure, identity and the body. Alongside this, the museum stages temporary exhibitions and a programme of cultural and educational activities, including events aimed at children and families, reflecting the Pompidou tradition of accessibility and engagement. The opening of the branch formed a key part of Malaga's transformation from a transit point on the Costa del Sol into a significant cultural destination, joining a cluster of museums that has reshaped the city's identity. Its location on the Muelle Uno, a lively waterfront of shops, restaurants and promenades beside the marina and within sight of the old town and the port, makes it easy to combine with a stroll along the harbour. Reached easily on foot from the centre, the museum draws lovers of modern art throughout the year across every season of the calendar. Tickets can be booked online, and the waterfront location on the Muelle Uno amid shops, restaurants and the marina makes the museum easy to combine with a stroll along the regenerated harbour throughout the year across every season of the calendar.
