RHS Garden Bridgewater

Unspecified/General

One of the most ambitious garden projects undertaken in Britain in recent decades, RHS Garden Bridgewater opened in 2021 on the grounds of a lost stately home at Worsley near Salford, reviving a vast Victorian estate as a great public garden for the northwest of England. Created by the Royal Horticultural Society, the charity devoted to gardening, the site covers an enormous area and is among the largest gardens in Europe, transforming what had become overgrown and derelict land into a showcase of horticulture, design and conservation. At its heart lies a magnificent walled garden, one of the largest in the country, divided into beautifully planted compartments including a paradise garden and a kitchen garden, while elsewhere the grounds encompass woodland, a lake, naturalistic plantings, a Chinese-inspired streamside garden and areas dedicated to wellbeing and community growing. The garden was conceived not only as a place of beauty but as a centre for learning, encouraging visitors to take up gardening and promoting the benefits of green space for health and the environment, with the planting designed to develop and mature over many years. As a relatively new garden, it offers the chance to watch an ambitious landscape establish itself, and it changes markedly with the seasons, from spring bulbs to summer borders and autumn colour. Tickets are cheaper for members and can be booked online in advance, the site has ample parking and facilities, and it welcomes visitors throughout the year across every season of the calendar. The revival of the historic estate, whose grand house was demolished in the twentieth century, has been widely praised as a model of how derelict land can be returned to public use and ecological health, and the garden was designed with sustainability and wildlife firmly in mind. For the surrounding communities it provides a major new amenity, with volunteering, learning and wellbeing programmes woven into its purpose, while for keen gardeners it offers inspiration and ideas across a huge range of planting styles. Because the landscape is still maturing, repeat visits reveal its steady development, and the marked changes from season to season, from spring blossom to autumn colour, give the garden a fresh character throughout the year, making it a rewarding destination across every season of the calendar.
