Stretching about 1.4 kilometres along Bernauer Strasse, the Berlin Wall Memorial is the central national site for remembering the divided city and those who died at its border. The street itself was one of the most notorious points of the divide: the buildings stood in the East while their pavement lay in the West, and in the first chaotic days after 13 August 1961 residents leapt from upper-storey windows to reach the other side before the houses were sealed and demolished. The memorial, inaugurated on 13 August 1998 on the corner of Ackerstrasse, preserves the last stretch of border fortifications kept in its full layered depth, so visitors can grasp how the wall, the patrol road, the lamps and the watchtower combined into a deadly system. A raised viewing platform looks down over the former death strip. Around the open-air grounds, multimedia steles, ground markers and the moving Window of Remembrance, with portraits of those killed trying to cross, document individual fates. The Chapel of Reconciliation stands on the spot where the GDR dynamited a church in 1985 to clear the border's sightlines. A Visitor Centre opened in 2009 and the permanent exhibition 1961 1989. The Berlin Wall opened in the Documentation Centre in 2014, after a major expansion made this the coordinated heart of the city's wall remembrance. The site is run by the Berlin Wall Foundation, and entry to the grounds and exhibitions is free. The documentation and visitor centres open Tuesday to Sunday, while the outdoor memorial is accessible daily from early morning until late evening. Unlike the souvenir bustle at Checkpoint Charlie, the mood here is deliberately sober and reflective, and most visitors find it the more honest and informative place to understand what the wall meant in daily life. Allow at least a couple of hours, and combine it with a walk along the preserved trace of the border to the north. A free smartphone app and audio guide deepen the visit, and regular guided tours in German and English are offered, with the open-air route walkable at any time. The viewing tower in the Documentation Centre gives the clearest sense of the layered border, looking down on a preserved watchtower and the raked sand of the death strip. Quiet, unticketed and rich in personal stories, the site rewards an unhurried visit; many people combine it with a walk to the nearby Mauerpark, once part of the border strip and now a lively Sunday flea market and karaoke spot.
