Elbstrand

Unspecified/General

On the northern bank of the Elbe, just west of Hamburg's harbour, a surprising ribbon of sand stretches for several kilometres past the old fishing village of Oevelgoenne and the suburb of Othmarschen, the city beach known to everyone as the Elbstrand. It is not a seaside resort but a working river shore, and that is precisely its charm: sunbathers and picnickers spread out on the sand within touching distance of one of Europe's busiest waterways, while vast container ships, tugs and ferries glide by close enough to read their names. The beach forms where the tidal Elbe deposits sand against the bank, so its width shifts with the tides, and bathers should know that swimming here is risky and discouraged, owing to strong currents, the wash from passing ships and busy traffic; most people come to paddle, stroll, build sandcastles and watch the shipping rather than to swim. Behind the sand rise wooded slopes and, at Oevelgoenne, a row of pretty old captains' and pilots' houses, a small museum harbour of historic vessels and the much-loved Strandperle kiosk, an institution where Hamburgers gather at sunset with a drink to watch the ships and the sky. Further west the elegant villas and parks of Blankenese and its steep stairway quarter overlook the river. The beach is easy to reach by harbour ferry, a scenic ride in itself, as well as by bus, and it is open and free at all hours. Bring something to sit on and, on cooler days, a jacket against the river breeze. With its mix of maritime spectacle, relaxed cafe culture and genuine local life, the Elbstrand offers visitors a refreshing, unpretentious slice of Hamburg away from the museums and shops, and one of the finest free spots in the city to simply sit and watch the world, and the world's cargo, go by. The harbour ferries that serve it, part of the public transport network, double as a cheap and scenic sightseeing trip, gliding past the docks and the fish market on the way. There are few facilities directly on the sand beyond the kiosks, so it pays to bring what you need, and the river breeze can make even warm days feel cool by the water.
