Galata Tower

Unspecified/General

The Galata Tower has watched over Istanbul for nearly seven centuries, its conical cap and stout stone cylinder rising above the steep streets of Beyoglu as one of the most recognisable landmarks on the European shore. It was built in the mid-fourteenth century by the Genoese, who held the district of Galata as a trading colony, and served as the high point of their fortified quarter; in Ottoman times it took on many roles, as a watchtower against fire, a prison, an observatory and a lookout. Legend holds that in the seventeenth century an Ottoman aviator strapped on artificial wings and glided from the tower across the Bosphorus to the Asian shore, a tale that has become part of the city's folklore whatever its truth. Standing some sixty metres tall on its hill, the tower offers from its upper gallery a celebrated panorama of the historic peninsula, the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the rooftops of the old European city, a view that has drawn sightseers for generations. Restored and reorganised as a museum in recent years, it presents displays on its history as visitors ascend by lift and stairs to the viewing balcony that encircles the top. The surrounding streets, lined with cafes, music shops, galleries and the lively crowds of Beyoglu, are an attraction in themselves and make the approach to the tower part of the experience. Reached on foot from the Galata Bridge or by the historic Tunel funicular, with timed tickets and often a queue in high season, the Galata Tower remains one of the essential viewpoints of Istanbul and a fixture of the skyline admired from across the water. Sunset draws the largest crowds to the gallery. The district of Galata around the tower has a long and cosmopolitan history, settled by Genoese and later by a mix of communities whose churches, synagogues and merchant houses still stand in the steep lanes, and the area has become one of the most fashionable parts of the city, full of galleries, boutiques and music shops. The tower's slim profile, visible from across the Golden Horn and from the water, has made it a symbol of Istanbul and a fixture of the city's postcards and films. Many visitors combine the climb with a wander through the surrounding streets, a ride on the historic Tunel funicular, or a walk down to the waterfront and across the Galata Bridge. Whether admired from a distance as part of the skyline or climbed for the panorama from its gallery, the Galata Tower remains one of the defining landmarks of the European city.
