Osaka Castle

Unspecified/General

Rising on its great stone base above a sea of cherry trees, Osaka Castle is the most famous landmark of the city and a monument bound up with some of the most dramatic episodes of Japanese history. The original castle was built in the late sixteenth century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the warlord who unified Japan after a long age of civil war, and it was conceived as the grandest fortress in the land, the seat from which he intended his family to rule. After his death the castle became the focus of the struggle for power that followed, and it was besieged and destroyed by the rival Tokugawa, who later rebuilt it, only for the main keep to be lost again to fire and lightning over the centuries. The present keep, a striking reconstruction in ferroconcrete dating from 1931 and renovated since, recreates the appearance of the original with its white walls, green roofs and golden ornaments, and inside houses a modern museum tracing the life of Hideyoshi and the history of the castle through models, armour, screens and artefacts, with an observation floor at the top giving views over the city. The keep stands within an extensive park of concentric moats, massive stone walls, turrets and gates, the grounds famous for their cherry blossom in spring and plum blossom in late winter, drawing great crowds to picnic and stroll. Set in the heart of the city and reached easily by subway, train and a pleasant walk through the park, Osaka Castle is the essential historic sight of the city and a powerful link to the warlords who forged early modern Japan. The sheer scale of the stonework is among the castle's most impressive features: the walls of the inner bailey include some of the largest single stones ever used in a Japanese castle, hauled into place by the labour of thousands, and the broad moats and towering ramparts give a powerful sense of the fortress that once dominated the region. Inside the keep, the modern museum traces the rise of Hideyoshi from humble origins to ruler of the land and the dramatic sieges that destroyed the original castle, displaying armour, weapons, folding screens and a famous golden tea room recreation, with the top-floor observation gallery rewarding the climb with views across the park and the city. The surrounding grounds, with their cherry and plum groves, are among the most popular places in Osaka to enjoy the blossom, and the park is alive with visitors picnicking beneath the trees each spring. Set at the heart of the city and easy to reach, Osaka Castle combines a stirring story, monumental architecture and beautiful grounds in the essential historic sight of the city.
