Dedicated to the Swedish producer and disc jockey Tim Bergling, better known to the world as Avicii, this interactive museum on Sergelgatan in central Stockholm opened in 2022 within the Space entertainment complex and was created in close cooperation with his family and the foundation set up in his name after his death in 2018. The artist rose from making tracks in his teenage bedroom to worldwide fame with songs that blended dance music with folk and pop influences, among them Wake Me Up and Levels, and the museum traces that ascent through a sequence of immersive rooms filled with light, sound and personal mementoes. A careful recreation of his childhood bedroom shows the simple equipment on which he started out, and elsewhere visitors can step into a studio to try crafting beats and melodies of their own, surrounded by his music. Beyond celebrating his work, the experience carries a serious message about mental health and the pressures borne by young artists, in keeping with the aims of his foundation. It has become a place of pilgrimage for the many fans who travel to Sweden in his memory, as well as an absorbing introduction for visitors new to his music. The displays follow his life in sequence, from a music-loving boy producing tracks on a home computer to a globe-trotting star whose blend of dance rhythms with melodic, folk-tinged songwriting reached vast audiences, and on to his retirement from touring under the weight of constant travel and performance. Immersive galleries use sound, projection and lighting to evoke both the euphoria of his concerts and the quieter spaces of the studio, and the reconstruction of his boyhood bedroom, with its unassuming gear, underlines how far he travelled from such modest beginnings. Hands-on stations invite visitors to try assembling music in his style, offering insight into the painstaking craft beneath the seemingly effortless hits. A strong thread running through the experience concerns mental health and the strains placed on young performers, reflecting the purpose of the foundation created in his name to help others. Set in the heart of Stockholm close to the central shopping district and well served by transport, the museum functions both as a memorial that draws devoted admirers from across the world and as a polished, engaging attraction for the merely curious, balancing celebration of his achievements with honesty about the difficulties that shadowed his success.
