Ballet Folklórico de México

Unspecified/General

The Ballet Folklorico de Mexico is a celebrated dance company that presents the traditional dances, music and costumes of Mexico's many regions in a polished theatrical spectacle, performing most famously on the stage of the magnificent Palacio de Bellas Artes in the centre of Mexico City. Founded in 1952 by the dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernandez, the company drew on extensive research into the folk traditions of the country to create a repertoire that transforms regional dances into a vivid, professionally staged show, blending authentic elements with theatrical artistry. Its performances move through the diverse cultures of Mexico, from the lively jarabe and mariachi traditions of Jalisco and the deer dance of the Yaqui people of the north to the dances of Veracruz, the indigenous rituals of the south and the revolutionary era, all brought to life with elaborate, brightly coloured costumes, live music and energetic choreography. The company has toured the world and won international acclaim, becoming a cultural ambassador for the country and a source of national pride. Seeing a performance in the opulent Art Deco and Art Nouveau setting of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, with its famous Tiffany glass curtain, is among the most memorable cultural experiences available to visitors to the capital. Amalia Hernandez, herself a trained dancer, founded the company with a small group of performers and built it through years of research into the folk traditions of Mexico's regions and indigenous peoples, reworking what she found into staged pieces that retained the spirit of the originals while shaping them for the theatre, a creative approach that some purists debated but that won audiences around the world. The repertoire is wide, embracing the courtship dances and mariachi of Jalisco, the deer dance of the Yaqui, the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of Veracruz, the dances of the Maya south, the wedding celebrations of the Huasteca and scenes from the Revolution, each performed with live music, intricate footwork and dazzling regional costumes. The company performs regularly at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the grand marble cultural palace in the centre of Mexico City whose interior of Art Deco and Art Nouveau design, murals by the great Mexican painters and celebrated stained-glass stage curtain make a spectacular setting in their own right. Having toured the globe and earned numerous honours, the Ballet Folklorico stands as a cultural ambassador for the nation, and a performance offers visitors a vivid, joyful and richly colourful introduction to the diversity of Mexican tradition.
