Unspecified/General
The largest amusement park in Mexico and one of the most popular in Latin America, Six Flags Mexico lies in the wooded hills of the Ajusco region in the south of Mexico City, drawing millions of visitors each year to its roller coasters and rides. The park opened in 1982 under the name Reino Aventura and was for years a beloved local institution, famous in part for having been the home of a captive orca whale whose story drew international attention before the animal was relocated; the park was acquired by the Six Flags chain around the turn of the century and rebranded under its current name. Set at high altitude amid pine forest, which gives it a cooler climate than much of the surrounding country, the park is organised into themed areas and offers a wide array of attractions, from major roller coasters with steep drops, loops and high speeds to family rides, children's zones, water rides and shows. Among its best-known coasters are several large steel rides that rank among the most thrilling in the country, and the park regularly adds new attractions to keep pace with international trends, including seasonal events around Halloween and Christmas. With its scale, variety and forested setting, Six Flags Mexico is a leading destination for thrill-seekers and families from the capital and far beyond. The park's setting in the Ajusco highlands gives it a character unusual among amusement parks, for at well over two thousand metres above sea level, surrounded by pine forest, it enjoys a cool, often crisp mountain climate that contrasts with the heat of much of the country, and the wooded slopes provide a green and scenic backdrop to the rides. Its long history as a beloved local institution adds to its standing: opened in 1982 as Reino Aventura, it was for years the great theme park of the capital, and it gained worldwide fame as the former home of a captive orca whose plight inspired a famous film and a campaign that eventually saw the animal moved abroad, a story still associated with the park. After it was acquired by the international Six Flags chain around the turn of the century and renamed, it was steadily expanded and modernised in line with the company's other parks. Today it is organised into themed zones and packed with attractions for every age, from towering, looping steel roller coasters that rank among the most thrilling in the country to gentler family rides, dedicated children's areas, water rides and live shows, with new attractions added regularly and elaborate seasonal events staged around Halloween and the Christmas holidays. As the largest and most visited amusement park in Mexico, drawing crowds from the capital and across the nation, Six Flags Mexico is a leading destination for a day of rides and family fun.
