Grouse Mountain

Unspecified/General

Rising steeply above the North Shore, Grouse Mountain overlooks Vancouver from a height of more than twelve hundred metres and is among the most popular mountain destinations in the region, a place where city dwellers and visitors can reach alpine scenery, winter sports and a range of attractions within a short drive of downtown. A cable car known as the Skyride carries passengers up the mountainside in a few minutes to the main plateau, from which, on clear days, a magnificent view opens out over the city, the harbour, the Gulf Islands and the distant peaks, a panorama that is especially striking at night and at sunset. The mountain operates year-round, transforming with the seasons: in winter it becomes a ski and snowboard area with runs, lifts, a skating pond, snowshoeing trails and tubing, floodlit for night skiing close to the city lights, while in the warmer months it offers hiking, a lumberjack show, birds of prey demonstrations, a wildlife refuge that is home to rescued grizzly bears, mountaintop dining and zip lines. The most famous way up is on foot, by the punishing trail known as the Grouse Grind, a steep climb of some two and a half kilometres and hundreds of metres of elevation up the mountain's face, nicknamed nature's stairmaster, which fit locals tackle as a fitness challenge, descending afterwards by the Skyride. With its accessibility, its views and the variety of its activities, Grouse Mountain is a year-round playground on the city's doorstep. The mountain has been a place of recreation for well over a century, and the modern resort has steadily added attractions to make it a destination in every season. In winter the floodlit runs allow skiing and snowboarding into the evening with the lights of the city below, joined by an outdoor skating pond, snowshoe trails and a sliding area. In summer the emphasis shifts to sightseeing and adventure, with a lumberjack show, demonstrations of birds of prey, a mountaintop ropes course and zip lines, and a wildlife refuge that is home to orphaned grizzly bears observed at close range. The Grouse Grind, the steep trail up the mountain's face, has become a phenomenon in its own right, a gruelling climb that thousands tackle as a test of fitness before riding the Skyride down. Dining ranges from casual cafes to a fine-dining restaurant with a panoramic outlook, and the views over the city, sea and islands are the constant reward, making Grouse Mountain a remarkable concentration of mountain experiences within reach of the city.
