Fairy Bower Beach

A small, sheltered cove on the rocky shoreline between Manly and Shelly Beach, Fairy Bower Beach is one of the quieter corners of Sydney's northern beaches, valued more for its rock pools and calm water than for surf. It sits along the Marine Parade walkway that links Manly's main ocean beach to the protected waters of Cabbage Tree Bay, and its modest strip of sand and tidal pools give it an intimate feel far removed from the busier beach nearby. The cove's best-known feature is the Fairy Bower ocean pool, a small seawater pool set into the rocks, and the bronze sculpture beside it of mermaids and sea creatures, the Oceanides, which has become a local landmark and a favourite of photographers. Because it lies within the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve, the water is rich with marine life, and snorkellers and divers come to see fish, rays and the occasional weedy seadragon among the rocks and sea grass. The calm, clear conditions also make it a gentle spot for swimming when the open surf is rough. The walkway that passes Fairy Bower is part of the scenic route around to Shelly Beach, lined with cafes and offering views back across the ocean, and it draws walkers, swimmers and divers throughout the day. The cove rewards those who seek it out rather than announcing itself, and its combination of a protected pool, public art and a thriving underwater reserve gives it a character distinct from the wide, exposed beaches on either side. At dawn and dusk it is a popular place to watch the light change over the water away from the crowds. Reaching the cove is straightforward on foot, following the Marine Parade pathway south from Manly's main beach, a level walk of only a few minutes that passes cafes and apartment blocks before the path narrows toward Shelly Beach. There are no large facilities at Fairy Bower itself, which keeps it quiet, though toilets, food and parking are close by at either Manly or Shelly. Conditions are usually calmest at high tide and on still mornings, when the protected water is clear enough for easy snorkelling, and the aquatic reserve means marine life is abundant and shielded from fishing. The combination of the ocean pool, the bronze Oceanides sculpture and the underwater reserve gives the spot a gentle, local feel, and it is a favourite with families, lap swimmers and divers who prefer sheltered water to the open surf. Sunrise here, with the light catching the sculpture and the sea, is a quietly popular ritual for early risers, and the wider walk continues around the headland to one of Sydney's most photographed small beaches.
