Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art
click to manageSplit across two riverside buildings in the Queensland Cultural Centre at South Bank, the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, known together as QAGOMA, form the state's flagship visual arts institution. The collection traces its origins to the Queensland National Art Gallery, founded in 1895, which occupied a series of temporary homes before settling into its permanent building. The Queensland Art Gallery, designed by the architect Robin Gibson, opened in June 1982 as part of the first stage of the cultural precinct and remains admired for its modernist design and water features. The Gallery of Modern Art, designed by the firm Architectus, followed in December 2006, sitting 150 metres away and giving the institution a second, larger campus devoted to contemporary work. GOMA is the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in Australia, and its opening was tied to the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, a series begun in 1993 that built the gallery's strong focus on the art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia. Between them the two buildings show historical and modern Australian art alongside international and regional contemporary practice. The galleries are known for ambitious free and ticketed exhibitions and for a children's art centre that has made them especially popular with families. The riverside setting, cafes and the cinema within GOMA encourage visitors to spend a full day moving between the two buildings and the surrounding gardens. The original Gibson-designed gallery has since been listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, recognising the architectural importance of the precinct. With free general entry and a central location among the state library, museum and performing arts venues, QAGOMA anchors one of the country's major cultural districts. The galleries are open daily, with free entry to the permanent collections and charges only for major touring exhibitions, making them an easy stop whatever the budget. A program of talks, films, workshops and the popular summer Children's Art Centre projects keeps the calendar full and draws repeat visitors. Reached on foot across the river from the city or by the precinct's own transport links, QAGOMA sits within a cluster of major institutions, so a visit can be combined with the state library, museum and South Bank's riverside parkland in a single outing.
