Howth Castle

Held by a single family, the St Lawrences, for around eight centuries, Howth Castle is one of the longest continuously occupied estates in Ireland, set on the slopes above the fishing village of Howth on the northern edge of Dublin Bay. The family traced its presence on the peninsula to the arrival of the Anglo-Norman knight Almeric in the late twelfth century. The castle that stands today grew up in stages, with a medieval core much altered and extended over the centuries, including remodelling in the early twentieth century by the noted architect Edwin Lutyens. Battlemented towers and additions of different periods give it a romantic, layered appearance. A celebrated piece of folklore attaches to the castle: the pirate queen Grace O'Malley is said to have been refused entry while the family dined in the sixteenth century, and in retaliation she abducted the heir, releasing him only on a promise that the gates would always be open at mealtimes, a tradition the family is said to have long honoured. The surrounding demesne includes rhododendron gardens famous for their spring colour, woodland walks and the ruins of a megalithic tomb known as Aideen's Grave. A deer park and golf courses occupy parts of the wider estate, which climbs toward the Ben of Howth. After remaining with the family until recent years, the estate changed hands, and parts of it have been opened up to new uses, including a cookery school and food operators in the old buildings, while public access to the grounds and trails continues. The castle itself is not generally open as a conventional museum. Reached by the DART suburban railway, Howth combines the castle and its grounds with a working harbour, seafood restaurants and a celebrated cliff walk around the head. For visitors it offers a blend of history, gardens and coastal scenery within easy reach of the city. Public access varies as the estate adjusts to new ownership and uses, so it is worth checking what is open before visiting, though the surrounding trails and gardens generally remain accessible. The village below, reached by the DART railway, offers a working harbour, seal watching, seafood restaurants and the start of the celebrated cliff path around the head. Combining the castle grounds with the harbour and the loop walk makes for one of the most rewarding day trips from the city, blending history, gardens and dramatic coastal scenery.
