More than three hundred cars and motorcycles fill Autoworld, a major motoring museum set inside one of the great glass-and-steel halls of the Cinquantenaire park in Brussels. Opened in 1986, it grew out of the private Mahy collection and has become a national institution telling the story of the automobile from its pioneering beginnings to the supercars of the present day. The setting is half the spectacle. The exhibition hall, built for the World Fair of 1888 behind the park triumphal arch, soars overhead in a vast vault of riveted iron and glass, and the ranks of gleaming vehicles laid out beneath it make for a dramatic sight. Veteran machines from the dawn of motoring share the floor with elegant pre-war saloons, racing cars and more recent classics. The collection has a strong European and Belgian flavour, recording the marques and engineering that the country contributed to motoring history, while also covering the wider international story. Temporary exhibitions, often built around a theme, a marque or an anniversary, keep the displays changing and give enthusiasts a reason to return. Beyond the cars themselves, the museum traces how the motor vehicle reshaped daily life, travel and design across the twentieth century, with period detail and context that appeal to general visitors as much as to dedicated petrolheads. Children and families are well catered for, and the scale of the hall means there is plenty of room to wander. Its location ties it neatly to the rest of the Cinquantenaire, where the Art and History Museum and the military museum stand around the same arch, allowing a full day of varied sightseeing in a single park within easy reach of the European quarter. For anyone with an interest in cars, design or social history, Autoworld combines a serious collection with a spectacular industrial-age interior, a combination that lifts it well above an ordinary transport museum. The museum is open daily with long hours, and tickets can be bought on arrival or online, with family rates available. Sitting in the Cinquantenaire park beside the Art and History Museum and the military museum, and within walking distance of the European institutions, it is easy to reach by metro and pairs naturally with the other attractions clustered around the triumphal arch.
